While the CGI doesn’t look terrible, the opening is incredibly simplistic in what it does. The first Kingdom Hearts game came out in 2002 and this opening shows its age when compared to the others. Still, it’s the first cinematic opening in a series that has had a lot of them over the years. Kingdom Hearts - and the franchise as a whole - would not be what it is without this opening. The intro has massive Final Fantasy X vibes, something a wider Western audience really hadn’t seen before in a video game. “Simple and Clean” is the song most people know from Kingdom Hearts even if they’ve never played the games before. The first Kingdom Hearts opening is incredibly iconic in its own way. Did I need to do this publicly because people were begging for my opinion on this topic? I’ve been a fan of the series since I was a kid, so Kingdom Hearts has a special meaning to me personally. It is probably one of the most absurd pieces of media around when you look at the individual pieces, but put together it’s somehow made it all work to have a lasting legacy in the video game zeitgeist. One part Disney, one part Final Fantasy, one part anime nonsense, all parts absolutely incoherent in and out of context. Kingdom Hearts is a video game series that contains multitudes.
